The history of the Chex party mix goes like this: Ralston Purina (yes, the same Purina that makes dog food) brought Wheat Chex (icky gluten, ptooey) to market in 1937. That’s almost 100 years ago! Then 13 years later, in 1950, Ralston Purina introduced Rice Chex, and two years later, in 1952, Chex party mix was born. Six years later RP created Corn Chex, and added it to the recipe.

That said, it is generally accepted that you can throw whatever you want in there. For example, just about any plain cereal that has some substance to it (so not flakes or crispies, but circles or squares). In fact, says Bonnie over at Quaint Cooking, “nowadays, as well as in the mid-century, people created this mix with what they had on hand. According to a 1950s newspaper article the snack mix “is made by toasting together some ingredients for an assortment of tidbits that’s extra crispy and zestily enhanced with seasoned salts. Among them are mixed nuts, miniature pretzel twists, oat cereal resembling tiny doughnuts (otherwise known as Cheerios), small squares of shredded wheat cereal, and dainty checkerboards of rice cereal.”

Our recipe follows the original recipe closely, but mix it up and make it your own!

Gluten-Free Vegan Chex Party Mix (a/k/a Nuts and Bolts)

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups Rice Chex cereal
1 1/2 cups Corn Chex cereal
1 1/1 cups gluten-free vegan croutons or stuffing mix (bread cubes)
1/2 cup mixed nuts (we use peanuts, tamari almonds, and pistachios)
1/2 cup gluten-free mini pretzels or pretzel sticks
4 Tablespoons vegan stick butter
1 Tablespoon vegan Worcestershire sauce
3/4 teaspoons seasoned salt
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder

Directions

Mix all of the main ingredients (i.e. the cereal, pretzels, nuts, and croutons) together in a very large bowl that can go into the microwave. Set aside.

Melt the vegan butter in a small bowl in the microwave, or in a small pot on the stovetop. Mix in the vegan Worcestershire and the seasonings.

Pour the butter mixture over the main ingredients and mix very well until everything is well-coated.

Put the bowl back in the microwave and microwave for 2 minutes, stir, then another 2 minutes, stir again, and finally another 2 minutes (for a total of 6 minutes).

Turn the mixture out onto parchment paper or paper towels and spread in a single layer and let it cool completely.
