We love getting organic, shelled, roasted peanuts, however often they come with the skin on, which can be very messy when eating them as a snack. And of course for lots of recipes you want the peanuts without the skins. If only there were an easy way to remove the skins of peanuts. Well guess what! There is! Here it is.
By the way, we get the organic, shelled, dry roasted peanuts from Nuts.com, and we love them! You can see them here (this is not an affiliate link): https://nuts.com/nuts/peanuts/organic-roasted-salted/1lb.html
Here is what we are talking about:
Before skins removed After skins removed
Now, to use our easy peanut skin removal method you will need a skimmer, which is also known as a ‘spider strainer’. As Grace Kelly (no, not that Grace Kelly) of Serious Eats explains, spider strainer skimmers are “commonly used in wok cooking, allowing the user to deftly and quickly toss or scoop food. If you take a gander at one, you can see how they get their name with the web-like threads of metal fanning out from a centralized point. Dumplings, pasta, blanched vegetables, and doughnuts are scooped up easily, with any residual liquid quickly draining away. It is useful in situations when you don’t need a full-fledged colander (or your colander-spoon hybrid is dirty). It’s a versatile tool, and one I’m always reaching for.”
To be honest, we had lost our spider strainer at some point, so had to buy a new one ourselves. We came across and ordered this set of three on Amazon (only $12.99 for 3!), this is also not an affiliate link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01569FXVK.
Ok, now that you have your peants and your spider strainer, here we go!
The Easy Way to Remove the Skin from Peanuts
Place your peanuts on a clean, smooth dish towel.
Bring the ends of the dish towel up and over the peanuts, enclosing the peanuts in the towel.
Now squeeze and knead the dishtowel with the peanuts inside.
Place your spider strainer over a bowl, and pour the peanuts out of the towel into the spider strainer.
You will see that most of the skins now go through the spider strainer and into the bowl.
Gently shake the peanuts in the spider strainer to dislodge any remaining skins.
What you will be left with is your skinless peanuts!
How will you use them? Let us know!
