We loved the original Primal Kitchen Buffalo sauce, and our copycat Primal Kitchen vegan buffalo sauce (“vegan wing sauce” for short) looks and tastes just like the original! (Which they call their “No-Dairy Buffalo sauce”.) Why do we say “the original” Primal Kitchen sauce? If you think that your last bottle of Primal Kitchen Buffalo sauce didn’t taste quite the same, there’s a reason for that, which we explain below. But our copycat Primal Kitchen Buffalo sauce follows the original recipe with which you first fell in love. Not only that, but because you’re making it yourself at home, you can make it less spicy, or even hotter and more spicy if you like! Serve this with our 1 Ingredient, 3 Step Vegan Wings for a real treat!

Now, if you look at all but the newest bottles of Primal Kitchen Buffalo sauce, you will see the ingredients are listed as: cayenne pepper sauce (aged red cayenne peppers, distilled vinegar, salt, garlic), cashew butter, avocado oil, organic garlic powder, and organic paprika.

Then Primal Kitchen Changed Their Vegan Buffalo Sauce Recipe!

As of right now on the Primal Kitchen website, they list the ingredients as, and we quote, “Cayenne Pepper Sauce (Aged Red Cayenne Peppers, Distilled Vinegar, Salt, Garlic), Pumpkin Seed Butter, Avocado Oil, Organic Garlic Powder, Organic Paprika”.

Did you catch that? Earlier this year Primal Kitchen switched the cashew butter for pumpkin seed butter. In fact, in May they explained in a blog post that “Cashews are out, no dairy creamy is still in! We’re taking the cashew butter out of our products, but we’re keeping the same texture and taste you know and love with pumpkin seed butter.”

However, while touting the benefits of pumpkin seed butter, they at no time explain why they made the switch. But we’re pretty sure that we know the reason: the price of cashews has skyrocketed. In fact, right now a pound of raw cashews costs at least twice as much as a pound of pumpkin seeds. Still, we can’t fault Primal Kitchen, they’re a business, and let’s assume they are in business to make money, which is fair.

But we don’t have to make that switch, we’re following the original recipe in our copycat Primal Kitchen Buffalo sauce recipe (although is it really a copycat if we’re not copying them by using pumpkin seeds?) Philosophical dilemma aside, if you love original recipe Primal Kitchen Buffalo sauce, you’ll love our copycat recipe even more because a) you can still get it ;~), and b) you can customize it, and c) you can whip it up any time you have a craving for it. And our recipe uses just 1/4 cup of cashews (and not cashew butter).

We make this in a 2-cup Pyrex measuring cup, using a stick blender (also known as an immersion blender). We think that it’s easiest that way, but if you don’t have an immersion blender you can make this in a blender, although you may need to double the recipe to get it to a level that your blender will be effective. On the other hand, this is a great excuse to get that immersion blender you’ve always wanted, and we highly recommend this KitchenAid immersion blender which we looove, in large part because the entire blade attachment comes off and can be thrown in the dishwasher!

Ingredients

1/4 cup raw cashews
1/4 to 1/2 cup Tabasco sauce (can also use Sriracha or Cholula red sauce, but Tabasco tastes most authentic)
1 Tablespoon avocado oil (can use another neutral oil but avocado is most authentic)
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon paprika (if you like it a little smoky use smoked paprika)

Directions

Put the cashews in a heat-proof container (now you know why we use a Pyrex measuring cup) and cover with boiling water. Let sit for 10 minutes, and then drain. Add the rest of the ingredients to the cashews and blend with a stick immersion blender until completely blended. Again, if you don’t have a stick blender you can use a regular blender but you may need to double the recipe in order for your blender to be effective.

Serve with our 1 Ingredient, 3-Step Vegan Wings.
