Everybody needs adequate good fat in their diet, yet many people don’t get enough good fat, or even pay attention to the amount of fat they eat on a daily basis. While the term “fat bomb” may not be familiar to you (unless you or someone you know is doing a keto diet), homemade vegan fat bombs are a great way to help make sure that your body gets enough of the good fat that it needs for brain and organ function, vitamin and nutrient absorption, and hormone and energy production.

According to Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center, “70 percent of our brain is made of fat…” and “Fat is very important for proper brain function…”. And as Healthline explains, “You wouldn’t be able to live a healthy life without [fat]”, going on to point out some of the essential roles dietary fat plays in your body, including helping you absorb vitamins; supporting cell growth, brain health, eye health, and the production of hormones; and providing a source of energy, and even helping wounds heal.

The Cleveland Clinic says that a healthy adult should get 20% to 35% of their daily calories from fat. That is, they say, 44 to 77 grams of fat if you eat 2000 calories. Now, people who eat a S.A.D. diet (Standard American Diet, yes, we know that “S.A.D. diet” is redundant) get plenty of fat, although it’s rarely the right type of fat. But people who are much more conscientious about what they put in their body (and you are one of those people, or you wouldn’t be here on a gluten-free vegan recipe site reading about fat bombs) don’t always realize that they are depriving their bodies of fat. That’s where these yummy and easy-to-make fat bombs come in.

Now, the ideal way to make these is with a high speed blender, which will liquify the ingredients without you even having to melt them on the stove or in the microwave. But you can make these without a high speed blender, by either melting the nut butter and coconut oil on the aforementioned stovetop or in the aforementioned microwave.

With respect to high speed blenders, we of course love our Vitamix, but it can be kind of a hassle to scrape out the Vitamix container, and it has the downside that when you are making something that is on the thicker side, such as a batter or dip or such, it’s hard to get everything out of the blades and the blade area, and as a result you end up wasting some of the yummy stuff that you are making. At least that has always been our experience.

Then we found the new Ninja Foodi Smoothie & Bowl Blender and OMG! This thing is more powerful than our Vitamix, and the blades come off for easy cleaning (instead of being permanently attached to the blender pitcher, like the Vitamix)! And it even has 1-button settings that turn the blender on and off automatically so you can walk away from it while it’s blending and do something else because it shuts off automatically! We are literally in blender heaven!

Now the deal about the Ninja Foodi Bowl Blender is that one of the containers is for making smoothie “bowls”, and also for making nut butters. But here’s our little secret: we use it for so many things! Basically anything on the thicker side that you would put in your Vitamix you can do in the Ninja Foodie Bowl blender, with those lovely detachable blades! In this picture the bowl container that we use to make this (and many other recipes) is the one that is on the base (the other containers also come with it):

If you want to check it out on Amazon, it’s on sale right now (as of the time that we are writing up this recipe), and you can check it out here. But, again, you can also use any high speed blender, or no blender at all.

The other thing that you may want to have is silicone cupcake liners. You can of course use the paper ones, but the silicone ones are so much nicer for this. These are the ones that we have; $11 for a set of 24, it doesn’t get much better than that!

If you just got done reading the above, guess what! It probably took you longer to read that then it will to make these, they are that easy!

Easy and Delicious 3-Ingredient Keto Gluten-Free Vegan Fat Bombs

Ingredients

1/2 cup solid coconut oil
1/2 cup nut butter (peanut butter is classic; almond butter is good too, as is sunflower butter)
1/4 cup raw cacao powder

Optional

1/8th teaspoon (no more or it will be too sweet!) liquid stevia (we actually like these just fine without any sweetener, but without it there is no sweetness at all, and some people find the raw cacao too bitter)

{NOTE: We found this awesome set of stainless steel measuring spoons that has both a 1/8th and a 1/16th measuring spoon! We’re in love!}

Directions

Line up your cupcake liners in a container that has a lid. We use a Tupperware container, which you can see in the picture, but any container that will accommodate your cupcake liners and that has a lid is fine.

Put all ingredients in a high speed blender and process until completely liquified and warm (the blender will warm up the mixture which will contribute to the liquification of the ingredients). If you don’t have a high speed blender, you can either melt the coconut oil and nut butter over low heat in a heavy bottomed pan, whisking the mixture constantly until completely liquid and fully mixed, or put the coconut oil and nut butter in a microwave safe bowl and microwave it for 30 seconds at a time, whisking after every 30 seconds until the mixture is completely liquified and fully mixed. Either way, whisk the raw cacao into the liquid mixture once you remove the liquified mixture from the stove or microwave.

Pour the liquid into the cupcake liners to a depth of about 1/2 inch.

Put the lid on your container, put the container in the refrigerator, and let your fat bombs set for a few hours. You will want to leave them in the cupcake liners, in the refrigerator, until you are ready to eat them. Once they have set you will be able to flip one out of the cupcake liner whenever you want a little treat full of good fat!

NOTE: We have tried making these with flavored protein powder (we get the Orgain vegan chocolate protein powder) instead of the raw cacao, and they are very good that way as well, but they are a bit gritty and not smooth and creamy.

NOTE #2: You can see a bit of the base of our Ninja Foodi blender photobombing the fat bombs in our picture below. 🙂

NOTE #3: We put one of these between two warm waffles and it got all nice and melty and was a great alternative to (vegan) butter and syrup!
