We’re not going to lie: this recipe came about because we needed it. (In fact, that’s how many of our recipes come into being.) That’s right, we not just ‘wanted’, but needed some barbecue sauce, and Right Now. You see, it was dinner time, and we had gotten a particularly intense craving for barbecue ‘chicken’ (using soy curls) to go with some left over brown rice and pinto beans, and we just had to have it.

And necessity being the mother of great recipes, we ended up with this, and so now we are sharing it with you. For when you’ve just gotta have it.

The Happy Gluten-Free Vegan and Vegan Costco group are always free. No annoying pop-up videos or ads, but it does cost us money to maintain the site and Facebook group, so if you've received value from the group or this site, won't you please leave a tip?

Fast and Easy 5-Minute No-Cook Barbecue Sauce

This recipe as is makes about 3/4 cup of bbq sauce; the recipe lends itself to easy doubling, or even tripling.

NOTE: The only ingredients that are not optional are the ketchup, the sweeteners, and the vinegar. Everything else serves to define the flavour profile of your homemade barbecue sauce.

Ingredients

1/2 cup ketchup
2 Tablespoons total of any of the following sweeteners – the darker the sweetener the more depth your barbecue sauce will have: molasses, agave, brown rice syrup, brown sugar, white sugar. (We generally go for one tablespoon of molasses and one of agave or brown rice syrup.)
1 Tablespoon apple cider vinegar or white vinegar
1 teaspoon dijon mustard
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon liquid aminos or gluten-free tamari or soy sauce
1/4 teaspoon liquid smoke
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground pepper
1/8 teaspoon red pepper (if you like a little zing)

Directions

In a medium bowl, whisk together the ketchup, sweeteners, and vinegar until smooth and everything is fully incorporated. Then add all of the rest of your ingredients, and whisk until smooth. Then taste it, and adjust seasonings to your liking.
