If you, like we, love Indian food, and like to eat Indian food at home, you are probably either making your own gluten-free vegan naan at home or, like us, have been looking for a recipe or source for vegan gluten-free naan.
We particularly enjoy both the Tasty Bite Coconut Squash Dal pouches, and the Tasty Bite Madras Lentils pouches, both available for a good price from Costco. We also like making our own Indian-inspired meals, such as our Potato, Pepper, and Peanut Sabzi, and our Vegan Palak Tofu Paneer, our Cauliflower and Potatoes in Coconut Milk, and our Quick and Easy Indian Cilantro Chutney (Green Sauce).
Whether you are making your own Indian creation from scratch, or using a Tasty Bite pouch, or something else, the odds are good that at some point you are going to be craving some gluten-free naan bread, and unable to find it.
What’s more, you may not want to make your own, whether because you just aren’t into all the steps involved, or because you tend to not plan your meals that far ahead.
That leaves you with looking to buy gluten-free naan, and for the most part there is none to be had. Even on Amazon (where, let’s face it, you can find almost anything, for a price) there is (at least as of the time of this writing) no gluten-free naan.
What’s a vegan, gluten-free, Indian food lover to do??
We’ve got you covered! We call this a ‘cheat tip recipe’ because it’s not really a recipe. Instead of being a from-scratch recipe, it uses an already-made commercial product, namely a particular brand of vegan, gluten-free pita bread which just happens to share the texture, taste, and even shape of naan bread!
The specific brand of gluten-free pita bread that we use to make our “cheat naan” is the BFree brand. It turns out that the BFree brand is carried by, among others, Walmart and Kroger brand stores, such as King Soopers, Pay-Less, and Ralph’s. It’s also available on Amazon here.
Once you have your BFree gluten-free pita, here is how to prepare it as naan.
Fast Vegan Gluten-Free Naan Bread
1 package BFree gluten-free pita bread
1/4 cup vegan butter or margarine, melted
Preheat oven to 450°
Brush the melted vegan butter or margarine onto both sides of each pita bread.
Place the buttered pita breads directly onto a heavy baking pan, place into the preheated oven, and bake for 3 minutes. If you leave it in any longer it will become hard; you can take it out before the 3 minutes is up if you like.
While in the oven the bread may puff up, this is fine. (We refer to this as ‘bread zeppelin’ ? )
Remove from the oven and serve immediately. Yum!
